People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said,
“At Thursday’s full Derry and Strabane full Council meeting I’ll be calling on all parties and Cllrs to support E&I Engineering workers democratic right to join UNITE the union. Every worker has the right to dignity and respect.
Since elected People Before Profit Cllrs have won Council support for a ‘Workers Rights and Social Justice’ agenda. The Council now encourages all workers to join a trade union and has requested employers allow workers unobstructed access to trade union membership.
In the context of the pandemic and financial uncertainty workers need a collective voice.
We are bringing forward legislation in Stormont and the Dáil to protect workers rights and challenge runaway inequality.”
Full motion to the Thursday December 17 full Derry & Strabane Council meeting:
Council will write to the management of E&I Engineering calling on them to respect workers rights by assuring workers are not harassed or victimised for trade union membership and activity.
Council will write to Donegal County Council requesting they contact E&I management with the same request.
Council will invite representatives from UNITE the Union to make a presentation regarding its efforts to protect workers rights.
