Tenants facing mass eviction in Tathony House have had a victory as their eviction notices have been determined to be invalid by the Residential Tenancies Board.
In October 2022 all 34 households were told that they had to leave by the 2nd June 2023 because the landlord was selling the block. Since then tenants have organised numerous protests and rallies against the mass eviction as well as taking a case to the RTB.
The tenants have been campaigning to get Dublin City Council to purchase the block but the landlord has refused to engage with the council.
The Tathony House case shows that tenants can win if they fight back and assert their rights. Many tenants are fearful of taking RTB cases or overholding because they might not get a reference from the landlord or even be blacklisted. Often tenants leave and move into more expensive and less suitable accommodation even if they don’t have to.
